Hermitage Cottage House

We are now at a Cottage House in Pointe-Claire, designated as one of the three regional satellite centres of the island of Montreal. Not far away from the CF Fairview Shopping Centre known for its vibrant & dynamic living environment.
I, in fact, started with this front door ;)

The family was living here & I got to know them through their brother & sister-in-law. I knew I could catch what they wanted & liked since the first meeting!
My intern Susel & I designed a beautiful living space for them where the furniture blends with the style. We created magic, according to my client…

Since it’s an open space for the entryway, living room & dining, we wanted everything to be cohesive. My clients wanted to have something modern, simple & humble, like a farmhouse but not too much… More of a Modern Farmhouse!
We worked with metal in black & gold finishes as well as wood in more natural hues. We used the colour Blue to give that punch in the space.

For the entrance, other than changing the main door & the floor tiles, we installed wallpaper to give more warmth & a nice first impression! This console was made to measure using solid oak & was left in its natural colour status but protected with water base matt varnish.

For the living room, we bought new curtains, new furniture & worked on the decoration accordingly…

In the dining room, we pushed the opening between the kitchen & the dining area & worked on its finishing! We really set up the place around the table!

We took down the wall between the kitchen & the family room & we installed this amazing island with lighting & counter chairs.

For the Family Room, we have converted that wood burning fireplace into a gas one & added this marble like wall. The client wanted a plain wall, not flashy, so we’ve used those gorgeous bright Laminam slabs & left niches on both sides. We added this sofa, this armchair & this custom made coffee table that speak the same language as the rest of the furniture in the house. This blue wall, Susel’s idea, constitutes the focal point  of this room with its fabulous wall mirrors.

It’s very hard for me to choose a favourite room or a favourite piece in this pretty cottage!
Everything is warm but very light at the same time. Every action taken shows how we can easily move around in this space…

I love this house, it reflects how my clients are; we made it attractive & we made it right for our friends & family & that was the best part, I think!



Mirror'd Excellence

Une fois, j’ai reçu un appel téléphonique d’une dame qui demandait pour les stores Hunter Douglas. Je lui ai parlé & expliqué comment ça fonctionne chez nous & j’ai rapidement réservé une visite à domicile.

L’espace convoité servait comme un bureau à domicile pour elle ainsi qu’un boudoir. Les deux espaces étaient reliés par une ouverture étroite. Ma cliente a immédiatement expliqué qu’elle veut démolir une partie de la cloison pour avoir un plus grand espace. J’ai sauté de joie quand j’ai entendu ceci & c’est comme ça que je me suis présentée comme designer d’intérieur pour son espace & non juste comme fournisseur de stores. Ma cliente & moi avons collaboré ensemble pour trouver des solutions aux problèmes qu’elle avait:
1- Disposition de meubles pas facile;
2- Revêtements de fenêtres dépassés;
3- ... & couleurs de murs sombres par rapport à l’espace.
Ma cliente voulait introduire un papier peint dans son boudoir & j’étais très excitée quand elle a osé celui que j’avais en tête pour elle. Ça prend du courage être designer! Une fois la cloison démolie, notre espace devenait plus grand & pour l’agrandir encore plus, j’ai mis un miroir mural dans l’entrée. Ma cliente l’adore & l’utilise comme agent de surprise pour ses visiteurs. Les yeux fermés, soudainement ouverts & tout l’espace se reflète dans ce beau miroir fait sur mesure. La causeuse, le fauteuil & l’ottoman ont été remplacés par un seul canapé très original. Un tapis personnalisé ainsi qu’une table à café & une table de coin ont été ajoutés. La grande armoire a été repeinte dans une couleur bleue sarcelle & mise en arrière plan du bureau. On a conservé la table ronde mais on a changé le luminaire suspendu par dessus au goût du jour. Les anciens revêtements de fenêtres sont maintenant des stores à rouleaux motorisés chevauchés par des voiles en "ripplefold". Le bureau de ma cliente occupe présentement la partie de la cloison dans le passé. Son rideau romain a été choisi & confectionné sur mesure avec une belle bordure. 

Le but de cette transformation a été de moderniser cette pièce & la mettre en fonction. Les améliorations apportées ont pleinement satisfait ma cliente & elles lui ont redonné l’envie de travailler dans son bureau.

Gold Accented Elegance

Ce projet fut un rêve pour moi parce que ma cliente m’a donné le « go » pour aller avec ma créativité. 

Tout en demeurant dans une palette neutre, j’ai su donner à cet espace un charme unique. J’ai utilisé des textures différentes & le tout selon les goûts de ma cliente. J’ai commencé avec un plan d’aménagement intérieur du salon qui est venu cassé sa longueur. J’ai utilisé deux canapés trois-places pour transformer l’espace d’un rectangle à un carré & c’est ce point-là qui a attiré l’attention de ma cliente & lui a ouvert l’œil sur une nouvelle manière de voir cette pièce. C’est à partir de ce moment que j’ai senti que ma cliente a commencé à se réjouir de son projet. En passant, ces intérieurs ont été conçus pour l’ancienne maison de ma cliente, qui a été vendue juste après la livraison du projet & même avant que je puisse prendre des photos pour mon portfolio professionnel. Ceci prouve que même si on change la périphérie, un intérieur bien conçu pourrait se déplacer ailleurs… Ma cliente possédait des meubles qu’elle voulait conserver tout en leur donnant une nouvelle vie. Les chaises d’entrée & ses chaises de salle à manger ont été recouvertes avec un tissu neuf qui se marie bien avec les nouveaux canapés blancs. Sa table de salle à manger était pour elle un grand classique à ne pas laisser aller… Le fait d’installer par-dessus un chandelier plus moderne & de la décorer d’une façon plus moderne aussi, a changé le look complètement. On a ajouté deux chaises capitaines toutes rembourrées dans un tissu magnifique ton sur ton. Dans le nouvel espace, les deux chaises capitaines servent présentement de chaises de petit-déjeuner pour ma cliente & son conjoint.  Les tissus utilisés sont riches & doux – pleins de fils soyeux. J’ai même ajouté un jeté en faux fourrure pour elle.

Le point fort de ce projet est dans le jeu de couleurs & de textures: tout va partout. Peu importe l’emplacement du meuble ou de l’accessoire, ça continue à s’intégrer en tout lieu.

Transitional Retrospective

“Thanks Rita. You were so helpful & it’s going to be beautiful”. This is what my client told me after presenting my concept to her & her husband.

This project turns around a Persian rug that my client had. The whole idea was inspired from that red & blue carpet. My client had a living room sofa & armchairs that she liked so much & found extremely comfortable. However, the fabric was old & needed to be refreshed. I started with picking neutral fabrics for her to reupholster her existing furniture. It had to be extremely neutral because her rug is so present with its warm colours. I went for whites & off-whites with some sand colours & I dared a blue-gold damask for one armchair. Her furniture layout was already good, it just needed some adjustments as well as a coffee table, side tables, a console & accents. After renovating her whole house, my client needed a professional advice related to interior design. She was expecting the right tips from the right designer. Her living room is spacious with high ceilings, which is a rare find these days. I enjoyed putting high end tables & high lampshades everywhere. I remember my client calling me right after delivery saying: “Rita, the lamps you picked are giant, they’re huge. I’m going to return them all!!!” I ran to her house & showed her how important it is to have “huge lamps” the way she described them. “We can’t leave everything so close to the floor & we have an enviable height! Your living should be well balanced & proportions should be respected”, I told her. I removed the lamps for her & showed her how empty her walls would be with short or no lamps at all. My client saw, understood my point & became extremely satisfied with the result. I made this living room a typical transitional space with classical & modern pieces mixed nicely together. The heavy weight is on the floor then it starts to be lighter slowly when you go up with your eyesight. The final point was her made to measure drapes. A light beige semi-sheer with marvellous antique gold hardware & a crystal finial. My favourite part of this project was the design education I had to supply in order to point my client in the right direction & this was much appreciated. The challenges were many & the last one was to find a new ottoman to my my client’s old armchair in terms of width, height & style, & I did it!

All I can say at the end: it is a memorable project. I took it from conception to completion.
